finding my voice (again)

The trees just outside the ward are becoming such familiar friends.

I try to go out and see them each day. I run my fingers down their rough spines. I feel my pockets with pinecones and then hide them in my bedside table drawer when I go back inside.

Today the sky was filled with blue, but there was also chilling wind despite the spring sunshine.I didn’t stay long outside today, but just long enough to feel the breeze on my face and hear it whispering to the trees as it blew through.

I tried to follow their whispers, those quiet voices above my head.

But instead I found a whisper in my heart that took me by surprise:

“I want to find my voice again.”
But what came next was even more of a surprise: “And I want to share my words with the world.”
